Artist Statement

My latest series of works have developed gradually over the last 5 years.  I try to paint how the light hits the landscape, what reflections are at play, and how the shadows on the rocks give them their own personality. My references come from both sketches on site, and photographs I have taken of places I have visited. I get my inspiration from walking the land and observing nature. My paintings embrace the human relationship with the land.

To prepare the canvas for painting I either use an underpainting or leave the white canvas depending on what sort of undertones I want to shine through to the surface. I draw the outline of the landscape with the paint.  I apply the paint freely and as the painting develops I tighten my mark making to make the finish image. I work in series and often reworking a painting, layering and taking away searching for an emotional response.
